Meeting the Next Generation of Musicians in Jeonju with World-Class Masters
Jeonju Hanbyeok Cultural Center, operated by Jeonju Cultural Foundation, has concluded master classes with music masters who have been active on domestic and international stages, and will showcase the results on stage in October.
In October, Jeonju Hanbyeok Cultural Center will host the "2026 Rising Star Series" every Thursday at Jeonju Hanbyeok Performance Hall. This performance is an extension of the master classes held in September, where students will showcase the musical interpretations and expressions they learned from the masters directly on stage.
This year's master classes were designed to help students deepen their understanding of music and prepare for the stage according to their respective majors and performance characteristics. Participating as instructors were Park Beom-hoon, former president of Chung-Ang University who contributed to national events music and Korean traditional orchestra development, Lee Seung-won, a conductor and violist who was the first Korean to win the 2024 Nikolai Malko International Conducting Competition, Lee Woon-bok, a conductor who studied at a prestigious music university in Germany and led orchestras in Chungnam and Daejeon regions, and Won Il, an artistic director who oversaw music performances at events like the PyeongChang Winter Olympics and 2026 UNESCO World Heritage Committee official events.
On October 2, at Jeonju University, conductor Lee Seung-won guided students on interpreting and expressing music based on his experiences in international competitions and top orchestras worldwide as a violist.
On October 10, at Jeonju Arts High School, conductor Lee Woon-bok delved into the structure of musical pieces and the intentions of composers, providing guidance on how to view works and the direction of musical interpretation.
On October 15, at Korea Traditional Culture High School, artistic director Won Il listened to students' performances directly, offering broad guidance on performers' attitudes, breathing, body usage, and Korean traditional music rhythms. Lectures and Q&A sessions based on various field experiences in Europe, 2026 UNESCO World Heritage Committee events, and ACC performance projects followed.
On October 18, at Jeonbuk University's Department of Korean Music, former president Park Beom-hoon elaborated on his understanding of works based on his experiences and narratives, emphasizing students' composition abilities and potential for development. Drawing on his extensive experience in the Korean music scene, he also pointed out specific areas for students to improve.
This master class program was designed not as a one-time lecture but as a process for students to develop the knowledge they gained into actual performances.
The first stage will be opened by Jeonbuk University students under the guidance of former president Park Beom-hoon on October 1. This will be followed by performances with conductor Lee Seung-won at Jeonju University on the 8th, with artistic director Won Il at Korea Traditional Culture High School on the 15th, and with conductor Lee Woon-bok at Jeonju Arts High School on the 22nd.
The performances will take place every Thursday from October 1 to 22 at 7 p.m. at Jeonju Hanbyeok Cultural Center's Hanbyeok Performance Hall, and admission is free for all seats.
Lee Young-wook, Director of Traditional Culture Room, stated, "The Rising Star Series is designed to ensure that the masters' experiences and teachings do not end with the lectures but continue on to the students' actual stage performances," and added, "We ask for a lot of interest and attendance to see how the learning accumulated from the September master classes will unfold in the four performances in October."
