【전북교육신문】초등학교 6학년이던 1984년, 전주컴퓨터학원을 다니며 베이직 언어를 배웠다. 6년 동안 세뱃돈을 꾸준히 모아 저축한 돈으로 8비트 애플 컴퓨터를 구매했는데, 그것이 지금의 내 직업으로 이어지는 시작점이었다.

최근에는 이번 지방선거에서 주목받은 선거 솔루션 '아리미' 개발자로서 정치하시는 분들에게 연락을 많이 받고 있다. '아리미'의 반응이 예상했던 것보다 좋았고, 그 결과로 하루벌이를 조금 벗어나 2019년부터 시작한 '전북로컬포털 아리' 작업을 다시 시작했다. 전북을 기반으로 포털과 SNS를 결합한 서비스를 구현하는 것이 목표다. 전북을 바꿔보고 싶은 욕심에서 시작해, 포기하지 못해 계속하는 프로젝트다.
왜 이런 걸 만드냐고? 나와 같은 자유직 노동자, AI 시대를 맞이해야 하는 젊은 청년들, 조직되지 못한 사회적 약자의 불안한 미래를 위해 무언가라도 해봐야 하지 않을까~ 그런 막연한 도전이다.
그 도전의 뿌리는 꽤 오래됐다.
2008년, 처음으로 교육감 선거에 깊이 관여했다. 도전은 실패했지만, 성공하게 되면 초등학교 방과후 교실에서 리눅스 교육을 활성화하고, 각 학교마다 학생인권위원회를 만들어 학교폭력을 줄이는 데 일조하고 싶어서였다.
그것이 허황된 꿈만은 아니었다. 문용주 교육감 시절, 전북교육청이 나의 제안을 받아들여 윈도우즈 NT 서버로 운영되던 전북 모든 학교의 웹서버를 리눅스 OS로 전환한 적이 있었다. 이후 윈도우즈 NT 서버만을 노리던 코드레드 바이러스 사태에서 전북의 학교만 무사했던 사례가 그 증거였다. 불가능한 도전이 아니었다.
그래서 나는 2010년 교육감 선거 패배에도 포기하지 않았다. 전주 지역 민간 컴퓨터 방과후 업체 사장님의 도움으로, 소속 컴퓨터 방과후 선생님들을 한자리에 모아 리눅스 교육의 필요성과 실천 방안을 논의했다. 하지만 이 시도조차 김승환 교육감이 민간 방과후 컴퓨터 업체들을 학교에서 퇴출시켜버리는 바람에 좌절되고 말았다.
만약 2008년부터 초등학교에서 리눅스 교육을 실시했더라면, AI 시대를 맞이하는 전북은 어떻게 되었을까? 분명 지금과는 달랐을 것이다.
그래도 나는 멈추지 않는다. 1984년 열두 살 아이가 프로그램 언어를 배우며, 세뱃돈을 모아 컴퓨터 앞에 앉았던 그 마음으로, 오늘도 전북을 바꿀 무언가를 만들고 있다.
My Liberation Connection Diary: Linux and ARI
In 1984, when I was in the 6th grade, I attended the Jeonju Computer Academy and learned the BASIC language. In 1985, after saving up my allowance for 6 years, I purchased an 8-bit Apple computer, which marked the starting point of my current career.
Many people may know me as a reporter for the Jeonbuk Education Newspaper, but I consider myself more of a freelance worker who engages in media citizen movements, software development, writing books, and promotional planning.
Recently, I have been receiving a lot of contact from politicians who were impressed by the election solution 'Arimi' that gained attention in the local elections. The response to 'Arimi' was better than expected, and as a result, I have resumed work on 'Jeonbuk Local Portal Ari,' which I started in 2019. The goal is to implement a service that combines portals and social media in Jeonbuk. It is a project that I continue because I started with the desire to change Jeonbuk and cannot give up.
Why do I create such things? It is a vague challenge for freelance workers like me, young people who must face the AI era, and the insecure future of unorganized social minorities.
The roots of this challenge go back quite a long way.
In 2008, I deeply involved myself in the superintendent election for the first time. The challenge failed, but if successful, I wanted to activate Linux education in elementary school after-school classrooms and create student human rights committees in each school to help reduce school violence.
It was not just a grandiose dream. During Moon Yong-joo's term as superintendent, the Jeonbuk Education Office accepted my proposal and converted all web servers of every school in Jeonbuk, which were operated on Windows NT servers, to Linux OS. The fact that only Jeonbuk's schools remained unharmed during the Code Red virus incident targeting Windows NT servers was evidence of this. It was not an impossible challenge.
Therefore, even after losing the superintendent election in 2010, I did not give up. With the help of a private computer after-school company owner in Jeonju, I gathered computer after-school teachers to discuss the importance and practical ways of Linux education. However, this attempt was thwarted by Kim Seung-hwan, the superintendent, who expelled private computer after-school companies from schools.
If Linux education had been implemented in elementary schools since 2008, how would Jeonbuk have faced the AI era? It would have been different from what it is now.
Still, I do not stop. With the same determination as the 12-year-old child who saved up allowance to sit in front of a computer in 1984, I continue to create something that will change Jeonbuk today.
