The 27th Jeonju International Film Festival (co-executive directors Min Sung-wook and Jung Jun-ho) concluded its 10-day journey from April 29 (Wednesday) to May 8 (Friday) under the slogan 'We Always Cross the Line'. This year's film festival screened a total of 236 films from 54 countries in 21 theaters, totaling 610 screenings. Through 269 program events, 754 domestic and international guests interacted with audiences.
The festival attracted 69,490 attendees with a seat occupancy rate of 82.3%. Out of the 610 screenings, 443 were sold out, including the masterclasses of Chai Ming Liang and Mike Figgis, as well as the film journey program, which also had a reservation rate of 90%.
The closing ceremony of the 27th Jeonju International Film Festival took place on May 8 at the Samsung Culture Hall of Jeonbuk University. The event expressed gratitude to the audience and shared expectations for the 28th Jeonju International Film Festival next year, marking the end of the festival.
The closing ceremony was attended by director Kim Hyun-ji and the cast of the closing film "Nam Taeryung". Director Kim Hyun-ji shared that meeting Nam Taeryung inspired her to create a film, stating, "I met Nam Taeryung back then, and I realized a new humanity was born here, seeing new possibilities." The Jinju Norebang Maekbak, who sang on set in the film, performed at the closing ceremony, enhancing the film's resonance and atmosphere. Award winners from the May 5 awards ceremony, including Lee Sun-yeon, director of "A Long Goodbye," also brightened the event.
This year's Jeonju International Film Festival presented 18 official sections including International Competition, Korean Competition, and Korean Short Film Competition, along with 4 subsections. Among the 236 films screened, there were 77 world premieres, 1 international premiere, 55 Asian premieres, and 57 Korean premieres, continuing the focus on new works.
Building on the audience response to last year's "Special Exhibition: Towards Possible Films," a regular section titled "Possible Films" was introduced this year, exceeding a reservation rate of 90% and confirming the audience's consistent interest in alternative film production. Additionally, through the "Special Exhibition: Meeting a Slightly Unfamiliar Ahn Sung-ki," the festival paid tribute to the late actor Ahn Sung-ki and provided a time for reevaluation. In commemoration of the innovative Spanish filmmaker Pedro Portabella's 100th birthday, five of his films were screened in the "Guest Cinephile" section. Various program events such as Film Journey, Jeonju Talk Talk, and Live Film Performances were organized, allowing guests from various fields to engage with the audience, presenting a more diverse experience.
The 18th Jeonju Project hosted 193 film industry professionals who conducted 248 business meetings. A total of 270 submissions were received for this year's Jeonju Project, with 8 projects selected for Jeonju Lab, 2 for Jeonju Lab: Short Films, and 5 for Work in Progress. At the awards ceremony, 18 physical and cash prizes were awarded across 11 categories.
This year showcased the success of films produced through the Jeonju Project. Kim Myeon-woo, a Jeonju Lab and K-DOC CLASS alumnus, won the Special Jury Prize and Documentary Award in the Korean Competition for his film "Revival." Another film, "Little Life" by Kim Yong-cheon, presented through the Jeonju Cinema Project, was also supported by the same initiative. Among the selected Work in Progress projects, "Wrinkles" by Lee Sang-moon was chosen for distribution support, receiving a distribution grant of 5 million won. The future progress of these supported projects continues to attract interest.
From the opening day to the first five days of the festival, the seat occupancy rate increased by approximately 3% compared to the same period last year due to the holiday effect. The merchandise shop recorded its highest sales ever, with a 3% increase compared to the previous year, attracting a warm response with queues of up to 120 people waiting from early morning.
Various side events and activities for the audience also attracted attention. The romantic alley screenings unique to the Jeonju International Film Festival, which garnered increasing interest each year, were expanded to accommodate more viewers, with a total of 4,175 attendees. At the alley screenings held at Pungnammun, the introduction of wireless headphones improved the outdoor screening environment.
An outdoor cinema was held at the western site of Jeonlagamyeong over the weekend, implementing tent seating to create an experiential outdoor viewing environment, with over a thousand attendees. The collaboration between the tourism hub city of Jeonju and Universal Studios, "Super Mario Galaxy in Jeonju," held at the Film Street and Hanok Village Gyeonggijeon, showcased various attractions including pop-ups, photo zones, outdoor screenings, and OST performances.
The 12th edition of 100 Films 100 Posters took place at the Cultural Auction House and Film Street, while the Salon program, which debuted last year, received a hot response, selling out immediately upon ticket release. The exhibition at the Cultural Auction House will continue until May 17, and the Media Wall exhibition at Shinsegae Duty-Free Main Store is scheduled to run until the end of June.
At the Film Street, in addition to the Nongshim Shin Ramyun pop-up, various experiential events by companies received a great response from festival attendees and citizens. Companies went beyond simple promotion, using films as a medium to convey their brand narratives and messages to the audience, showcasing a new form of collaboration. This exemplified a new collaborative model between the film festival and companies, drawing attention to the potential of creating new festival collaborations.
The Jeonju International Film Festival this year went beyond just screening films, becoming a space where films linger and continue. Director Chai Ming Liang chose 'Jeonju' as the filming location for the "Walker" series, and the newly established "Possible Films" section firmly established itself as a new face of the festival within the audience's response.
Just like the slogan 'We Always Cross the Line,' the Jeonju International Film Festival expanded new possibilities this year in its unique Jeonju way. With memories shared with the audience during this time, the Jeonju International Film Festival will return next spring as the 28th Jeonju International Film Festival.
